Am 6. Februar stellt die EU-Kommission Szenarien vor, wie die EU Klimaneutralität bis 2050 erreichen wird – inklusive neuer Klimaziele für 2040. Diese Vorschläge sind der Grundstein für die europäische Klimapolitik des nächsten Jahrzehnts.

Michael Bloss, klimapolitischer Sprecher der Grünen im EP, kommentiert den geleakten Vorschlag der EU-Kommission für die Klimaziele für 2040:
Der Vorschlag ist an der Untergrenze von dem, was wissenschaftlich notwendig ist. Für eine glaubwürdige Vorreiterrolle beim Klimaschutz muss die Europäische Union auf das obere Ende zielen - und das sind mindestens 95 % CO₂-Reduktion bis zum Jahr 2040.
Die Strategien zur Erreichung dieser Klimaziele lesen sich wie ein Lobby-Papier der fossilen Industrie. Statt Züge und Elektromobilität will die EU-Kommission teure E-Fuels durchbringen. Anstatt ganz auf günstige Energie aus Sonne und Wind zu setzen, schlägt die EU-Kommission Gas- und Kohlekraftwerke vor, die mit einer Zombie-CO2-Abscheidung ausgestattet sind. Dabei ist klar: Alles CO₂, was wir versuchen zu vergraben, kommt irgendwann wieder ans Tageslicht.
So können dreckige Kohle- und Gaskraftwerke bis in alle Ewigkeit weiterlaufen, ein Mega-Geschenk für die Großkonzerne. Sogenanntes „Clean-Coal“ oder „Clean-Gas“ sind und bleiben Scheinlösungen. Jetzt fällt von der Leyen auf die fossile Lobby rein. Das ist keine Strategie für die Zukunft.
Damit Europa nach vorne kommt, braucht es konkrete Schritte. Ein Klimaziel für das Jahr 2035 und ein messbares CO₂-Budget. Nur so kommen wir weiter.

Michael Bloss, leading climate politician with the Greens, comments on the leaked COM's proposal for the 2040 climate targets:
The proposal falls short of the scientifically necessary benchmark. To truly lead in climate protection, the European Union must set its sights higher – aiming for a minimum of 95% CO₂ reduction by 2040.
The strategies outlined to achieve these climate goals seem plucked from a fossil fuel industry playbook. Instead of championing trains and electromobility, the EU Commission veers towards introducing costly e-fuels. Rather than fully embracing affordable energy from the sun and wind, the Commission suggests gas and coal-fired power plants equipped with what can only be described as zombie CO2 capture. It's crystal clear: any CO2 we attempt to bury will inevitably claw its way back into the light.
This approach essentially greenlights the perpetual operation of dirty coal and gas power plants, a colossal boon for large corporations. The notions of 'clean coal' or 'clean gas' are, and will remain, elusive solutions. Now, von der Leyen seems to be capitulating to the fossil fuel lobby. This, undeniably, is not a forward-thinking strategy.
Europe needs clear actions to move forward. Setting a climate goal for 2035 and having a measurable CO₂ budget are the only real ways to make progress.
